Eureka In The Post

May 31, 2010

My last several days have been spent in a whirlwind of sewing inspiration.
It started Friday with unexpected joy in the post.

I received an exciting and unexpected 'thank you' gift from a friend.

Vintage fabric, a vintage hand towel and a hand embroidered, linen table drape.
Further inspiration was gathered from the fact that the art work from my newly purchased music was simpatico. (The music is awesome too. I highly recommend all the above albums.)

I have been saving vintage fabric and clothing waiting for inspiration.
The linen slip under Freya's , 'Wendy Skirt' (Wendy sent the lovely gift.) is made with these very old cloth diapers.

A skirt for me.
I made a fancy skirt using a vintage Christmas tree skirt made out of tulle and sequined felt poinsettias.

The top of the skirt is made from fabric I found at a thrift store in Logan, UT (2004).
I have been saving it for a long time.

Another vintage inspired skirt for Freya.
Made with an embroidery piece, a vintage apron made of rayon fabric with raise white dots and a linen slip.

I worked the apron pocket into the skirt design.
For the love of gingham.

I think I will make five or six more of these skirts.
Vintage fabric and embroidered linens are calling to me to be made into something.
Yes, the fabric is talking to me.

Oh yeah, I sewed a few pair of summer cozies for me out of vintage sheets I have been hording.
(The fabric speaks.)

What inspires you?

These are photo's Freya took.
I promised her that if she would leave me alone to write my blog for a half an hour I would post her photo's
Cheers to a new week friends!

What To Do With Wood

June 1, 2010

What To Do With Wood

Happy June!

I came across an estate sale this past weekend and found this little handmade wrought iron shelf.
I love finding interesting things that someone has created.

I found this frog too.
I don't use them to hold flowers in a vase much but they are fun on my mantle holding old postcards, a photo or a small drawing of Freya's.
I don't come across frogs very often and when I do find them at antique stores they usually cost eight or more dollars.
This one was a bargain for 50 cents.
Over the years I have collected old molding and other funny wood pieces.
I am looking for some good ideas of what I could make.

A bucket of staircase spindles.

A basket of chair spindles.

Faded and chippy blue paint is my favorite.

Molding and an old window screen.

If you have any ideas of what I could make please leave me a comment.
I would be so grateful.
Happy June!

The Hogle Zoo And Tomatoes

May 26, 2010

The Hogle Zoo And Tomatoes

Today was the best day ever.
Freya and a few of her kindergarten classmates rode in a school bus for the first time.

We went to the zoo.

The iconic Hogle Zoo drinking fountain.

The newest addition to the zoo: Homosapien.

All the perfect shades of pink on one bird.

And orange.

Freya and I are growing tomatoes for the first time ever.

Fresh tomatoes are heaven.
This is the next Davis family experiment.
Chris sprayed the aphids in case you were curious about how the first experiment ended.

Freya's Summer Clothes

May 25, 2010

Freya's Summer Clothes

Freya worked on 'thank you ' cards and I worked on her summer clothes.

I used Simplicity pattern # 5489.
Of course I needed to make five of them.
I call it 'task oriented'.
Chris calls it 'obsessive'.
Either way Freya's clothes for the summer are finished and I love them

I pulled from my fabric and notions collections so I didn't have to make any trips to the store.
That always make a task easier.
No trips to the store.

What are you making this summer?

Freya's Unbirthday Partty

May 22, 2010

Freya's Unbirthday Party

Today Freya had an unbirthday party.

Freya's actual birthday is July 9 but I thought it would be much easier to get her classmates together before school got out for the summer.

It was a smash!

My sister and Teah. (I tried three times to flip the photo but.. no.)

A tea party with real lemonade (thanks Chris) and cubed sugar, PB&J , plus carrots and strawberries.

My favorite photo.

I asked the girls to wear a pretty dress on the invites and they all looked so lovely and princessey.

Freya's cousin Haley is in the blue dress.

Despite it being quite cool out the party moved outside for dress-ups, kickball and Simon Says.

This is my favorite photo.

This is my favorite photo too.

Dancing to Madonna's Ray Of Light

I am not embarrassed to admit I bought cupcakes at the store.
They were much better than I could ever make.
I am cooking/baking impaired.

Gifts!

Special cards that will last long after the gifts are forgotten.

A hostess gift for me.

Freya's photo of her goodies.

Freya's first photos of her goodies.
She had to retake it because the laundry basket is in it.
Cheers to a new week!
