Out Of The Desert

January 27, 2011

Out Of The Desert

Not to be over dramatic but I feel as if I have been wandering through the desert for weeks.
When I'm not creating I don't feel alive.

Freya's been full of creativity.
We worked on these craft stick puppets today.
Her drawings get better and better.

Also I whipped up two skirts for her.
They are simple but it felt good to feel fabric and hear the hum of my sewing machine.

The argyle fabric was a gift from my friend Julie.
I've known Julie since the 6th grade and we have recently renewed our friendship.
Our goal is to meet up every other month.
Julie is wise and I am grateful to have her in my life again.

Freya checking out the twirlyness of her skirt.
Very important.

I sewed Freya a Valentiny skirt too.
I added three layers of lace to make the bottom look like frosting.

Although wrist cuffs are everywhere these days I still love making them.
I have so many bits and bobbles that are perfect for cuffs.

Lastly, a new antique store opened a block away from my house.
It's full of linens, buttons, ephemeral, feed sacks, dollies, ribbons, velvets and such.
Basically everything I love and collect.

It's inspired me greatly and I picked up a few small pieces yesterday.

A French tin.

French tin full of buttons.

Buttons.
Oh yes, I love buttons.
Most of them were a dollar.
The white and pink flower piece is a belt adornment.
It will make a great cuff.

Cherub buttons.

I think the keys will look awesome on a cuff too.
I'm glad to be back to my blog.
I've missed it.

Adirondack Star Quilt

January 14, 2011

My creativity is gone.

I haven't had an inspired idea for weeks now.
Fortunately I have a fall back quilt to work on.

I have been working on this Adirondack quilt for six years.

One day it will be finished.

The quilt is made up of 16 paper pieced diamonds sewn to a square and appliqued to a large fabric square.

The finished quilt will measure 70"x84" plus binding.

I have 22 squares done and 10 more to sew.

Have I mentioned I love to hand sew?

I hope to have it finished within the next two years.
Also I hope to be inspired soon.

Red Tongue, Blue Tongue

January 11, 2011

Red Tongue, Blue Tongue

This will be a post of few words.
I am feeling very, very lazy.

Some recent thrift finds.

I scored big with boxes of vintage patterns circa 1952 to 1974.
I am going to sell them on my Etsy for $5, $6, $7 and #8 dollars which will include shipping.
Please let me know if these prices are reasonable.
I really need your feedback.

Red tongue and blue tongue.
That Oliver's and Freya's tongues match their shirts is purely coincidental.

I am working on some interesting post.
Please don't abandon me.

Log Cabin Quilt

December 31, 2010

Log Cabin Quilt

In 1997 while pregnant with Oliver I took beginning quilt classes with my aunt.
It was the first time I purchased fabric and my first time using a sewing machine.
Of course I fell in love with fabric and the possibilities of creation.
I had long admired and dreamed for an armoire filled with lovey, time worn quilts.
Over the years I've hand quilted a dozen plus quilts and have enjoyed it very much.

I haven't hand quilted for several years now and I don't think I will as I'm about to pick up knitting needles for the first time.
(My sweet family has treated me to lessons this year.
There is a cute antique/yarn store a mile from my home where an older lady teaches private lessons for $20 an hour.)
In my basement there are four pieced and pinned quilts ready for quilting.
I won't be hand quilting them ever so I've decided to simply tie, bind and use them.

This log cabin quilt has been stored for seven years.
It has 64 squares and a very piecey border.
It measure 108" x 126.
It's ginormously huge and warm.
I loved making it.

I love it on my bed even more.
Best wishes and love this New Year.

Winter Garland

December 28, 2010

Winter Garland

A few winters back I made a garland out of felt and batting (scraps from quilt making).

It came apart awhile ago.
I restrung it this month and added pink felt and shiny ornaments.

It doesn't scream Christmas so I hung them around the house instead of putting them up 'til next year.

It was a quick, inexpensive, fun and pretty project.
